Un nuovo sviluppatore della scena Wii, tale Arep, ci ha fatto pervenire, con preghiera di diffusione, la prima release pubblica di una sua applicazione. Si tratta di un programma simile a RawDump, che però è rilasciato sotto licenza GPL e, quindi, completo di codice sorgente. Il programma si chiama FriiDump, e propone alcune interessanti caratteristiche:

• Innanzitutto, data la disponibilità dei sorgenti, il programma può girare su sistemi operativi diversi da Windows, facendo quindi la felicità degli utenti GNU/Linux, *BSD, MacOS X, ecc... Anche se per ora supporta solo Windows e GNU/Linux.
• La disponibilità dei sorgenti permette, inoltre, la facile estensione del programma da parte di chiunque, così come il supporto a un maggior numero di lettori DVD.
• A livello un po' più pratico, il programma mostra l'hash MD5 (e altri) delle ISO create, insieme a molte informazioni sui vari dischi, senza la necessità di programmi esterni.
• Infine, prevede 4 metodi diversi per effettuare il dump dei dischi.

Insomma, anche se manca di un'interfaccia grafica, per ora il programma pre promettente. Purtroppo, però, la compatibilità del programma è ristretta, almeno per il momento, agli stessi lettori supportati da RawDump, ossia:

• LG GDR8162B
• LG GDR8163B
• LG GDR8164B

Inoltre, il programma è un po' più lento di RawDump, e dovrebbe richiede circa 3 ore per un dump completo di un disco Wii, e circa 1 ora per uno GameCube.

Un aspetto sicuramente interessante è che il programmatore ha deciso di appoggiarsi completamente a noi di Wii Tribe per il supporto alla sua opera, non solo incaricandoci di annunciarne la pubblicazione, ma anche indicando, nel file ReadMe, di utilizzare il nostro forum per chiedere aiuto e comunicare problemi. Pare che lui non parteciperà attivamente alle discussioni, ma promette di leggere ogni singolo post in merito. La cosa non può che farci onore, e la nostra speranza è che la nostra comunità lo aiuti a perfezionare il frutto delle sue fatiche, estendendosi il più possibile!

A new developer of the Wii scene, under the nickname of Arep, has given us the task of publishing his first creation: it's FriiDump, a RawDump clone released under the GPL, which means that the program comes with its complete source code. As such, this will finally make users of non-Windows operating systems happy, as they will finally be able to make backups of their precious GameCube and Wii discs!

Although, the program only supports Windows and GNU/Linux so far, the availability of source code make the program easily extensible by everybody.

Program highlights include the immediate calculation of MD5 and other hash codes of the generated ISO and the display of a lot of useful disc information.

The only drawback is that FriiDump is a bit slower at dumping than RawDump: it takes about 3.5 hours for a Wii dump, and about 1 hour for a GameCube one. Also, the compatible drives are the same as RawDump, even though it is certainly easier to add support for a new drive if the source code is public.

The author decided not to give direct support for his program, in order to avoid legal problems, but he says that users can use our forum at Wii Tribe to help each other and report problems, even though he will not be participating at any discussions.
